In the early 1980's a group of women affiliated with A Safe Place and Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) were deeply concerned by the amount of violence and assault in their community. They decided to work together to make their neighborhoods safer. They established a network of "safe houses" for women and children fleeing from the threat of violence. A green bulb burning in the porch light identified the houses for those in need of assistance. This grassroots movement meant that anyone in danger had a safe haven and it empowered individuals to make their community a less violent place to live. The Porch Light Award was created in honor of the work accomplished by these women. The award is given annually to a person who has made a considerable contribution to improving the lives of women through exemplary dedication, passion and commitment to building a safer, healthier society. |
